One of our native crab apples. Seedlings grown from fruit gathered in the Humber Valley in Tkaronto. American Crab Apple produces many flowers coloured pink to white in spring, followed by small tart fruits ripe in late summer to early fall. The fruits are very high in pectin, so are a great addition to jams and jellies. The early and abundant flowering of this species make it a great nectary plant as well as pollinator for cultivar Malus species.
It is possible these trees may be hybridized with other Malus species to some extent. Genetic variation will cause slight differences in mature trees appearance.
