Black Locust is a hardy and fast growing tree that has huge potential for people eager to work with it! We've seen saplings on our land grow more than six feet in a season! Black Locust produces straight, hard, rot resistant wood quickly, with some sources claiming it rivals pressure treated wood in terms of its rot resistance (without chemical treatment!). We have read different sources claiming 50-80+ years of rot resistance with soil contact. Black Locust firewood has the highest BTU's of any North American hardwood other than Hickory. Makes excellent fence posts or harvested young as pole wood. Coppices readily, spreads by root suckers forming small stands. In June, Black Locust produces bountiful white (and occasionally purple) pea-like flowers that attract a multitude of polinators. An excellent candiate for soil stabilizing, reforestation efforts (as an early successional species, Black Locust provides shade for other trees to grow in), and carbon capture. Requires full sun to grow.
