Japanese Quince is a beautiful compact shrub growing up to 3' tall and 4' wide. It is one of the first shrubs to flower in late winter to early spring with beautiful reddish-orange flowers. It's green or yellow fruits ripen in the Autumn, with an apple like shape and can be 2 inches in diameter. The fruit is harsh and astringent when raw becoming aromatic with a citrus slightly acid taste when cooked. The fruit can be made into excellent preserves such as a jelly or jam. It is delicious when paired with apples to make pies or crumbles. Japanese Quince juice contained 150mg of Vitamin C, more than lemons!
Shrub serves as a ground cover and can be planted as a hedge. Incredible habitat plant for birds and early pollinators. Although it likes full sun and moist well drained conditions it can tolerate other conditions. Full sun allows for optimal fruit production.
