Madawaska Raspberry is early ripening, fruits are medium-large sized, dark red in colour and moderately firm. This variety was developed in Ottawa, Ontario, released to the public in 1943.
Red raspberry leaves are great to harvest as a herbal medicine, they are full of antioxidants and have benefits for women's reproductive health. The leaves can be harvested and dried for tea. Other infusions can be made for stronger applications.
The raspberry is a perennial, coming back every year, fruit occurs on second year canes, so pruning is necessary every year to cut out canes that have already produced fruit. Canes are long with few spines. The raspberry can spread, so choose where to plant it carefully. Its roots travel, reaching outward. It is recommended to plant in an area you will consistently mow around.
This is a hardy raspberry plant, able to grow in zone 3. Somewhat sensitive to powdery mildew, but no other known sensitivities.
