One of our many native Oaks. Red Oaks produce a fairly large sized acorn that is very high in proteins and fats. The raw acorns are high in tannins so must be leached to remove significant tannin levels. Many Indigenous groups used acorns as a staple food. Anecdotally we have heard that mature Oaks have the largest diversity of insect species living in them of any North American tree. Oaks grow very large and are long lived, truly a tree you can plant for the future!
